Italic Text Generator
Paste slanted letters into any text box. Four italic alphabets are at the top, and every other style is further down.
This swaps your letters for special characters. It is not a font file, and some screen readers read it badly, so keep it to decoration.

Example
The line Hello, world, in this style:
Serif and sans
Serif italic has the traditional calligraphic slant. Sans-serif italic is a plain letter leaning to the right. Add weight with the bold italic versions.
No italic numbers
Unicode has italic letters and no italic digits, so numbers stay upright. A date or a price will not slant. The bold italic alphabets include digits, but those digits are bold, not italic.
The odd small h
In serif italic the lowercase h is stored as the Planck constant sign, a symbol that was already in Unicode when the italic alphabet arrived. It looks like an italic h, and it is what stops that one letter from turning into a box.
Real italics first
A normal italic setting or Markdown asterisks keep your words as ordinary letters. Reach for these only when nothing else is on offer.
Questions
Why are my numbers upright?
There are no italic digits in Unicode, so there is nothing to convert them into.
Is italic the same as oblique?
Not quite. Italic is a separately drawn slanted design, oblique is the upright letters tilted. These characters are italics.
Will one italic word look right inside a sentence?
Usually. Fonts vary a little in size, so it may sit slightly higher or lower than its neighbours.
